Why Do You Need Bullet Resistant Doors & Windows?

Bullet-resistant glass provides active shooter mitigation to keep people inside your property safe during the unfortunate event of an active shooter or sniper scenario.

You might think of bulletproof windows as something that only traveling dignitaries and high-security government facilities require, but the reality is that any commercial property can become the target of an active shooter or sniper.

Glass doors and windows are any property's most vulnerable entry points and a violent attacker armed with a gun can easily shoot out traditional window glass to climb through a window or open a door from the inside.

However, when you over-glaze (cover from the outside) your existing glass with bullet-resistant glass, it becomes much harder for an armed intruder to gain entry.

There are special types of security glass and glass-like products that can stand up to a prolonged ballistic attack, making it much less likely that someone on the inside gets hurt.

Bullet-resistant glass creates a valuable window of time that allows people on the inside to react by calling the authorities, escaping, or barricading themselves somewhere safe inside the property. It also gives the police time to arrive and neutralize the threat.

The Difference Between Bulletproof & Bullet Resistant Glass

It’s important to note the difference between bulletproof glass and bullet resistant glass because the term “bulletproof” is widely misused.

There is really no security glazing that can be truly labeled 100% bulletproof, even the ones that are prohibitively thick, heavy, and expensive. Although a 2” thick ballistic glass is almost certainly going to stop a lot of different types of bullets, we cannot call it bulletproof. There is always a larger and heavier round that can, with enough velocity, penetrate any glass. On a practical level, you simply aren’t going to be able to put a very heavy sheet of glass into a standard structure’s window frames.

However, there are plenty of bullet-resistant glazing solutions out there that provide varying levels of protection against ballistic attacks, depending on the thickness of the sheets and their specific compositions.

Many of our bullet-resistant glass products receive a ballistic rating from the Underwriters Laboratories (UL), which is a primary organization that rates all types of commercial safety and security products.

These ballistic ratings specify the level of ballistic attack the security glazing can stand up to, including the caliber and number of bullets it can stop when fired from a certain type of firearm.

In other words, there are almost always going to be bigger, badder guns that can pierce most types of bullet-resistant glass, but you can still achieve a high level of active shooter and sniper protection.

The strength of bullet-resistant glass lies in its ability to stop rounds from many common firearms and significantly delay entry by an active shooter to save lives.

Riot Glass® Bullet Resistant Doors & Windows

Riot Glass® offers a full range of bullet-resistant doors (glazing shields for glass doors) and bullet-resistant windows.

Our products come with UL ratings all the way up to a UL 752 Level 8 rating. A product with a UL 752 Level 8 rating is capable of resisting a high-speed, multi-shot attack from an active shooter or sniper using an AK-47 rifle and firing .308 150-grain military rounds.

Riot Glass® is designed to be retrofitted into or on top of almost any existing glass door or window framing system, making it much more affordable and viable than a complete glass replacement.

When you put a ballistic-grade glazing shield over a glass entry door, for example, you’re essentially turning the glass portion into a ballistic door ー without replacing it or significantly altering its appearance. We also offer completely rated doors where the door frame is also ballistic-grade.

Riot Glass® bullet-resistant windows and bullet resistant doors and frames have a sleek profile and look and feel like your regular window glass. Riot Glass® provides virtually invisible active shooter/ sniper protection for properties of all types.

Who Can Benefit From a Riot Glass® Retrofit?

An active shooter scenario can unfold anywhere, from schools to workplaces. There really isn’t any type of commercial property that can’t benefit from upgrading its security with a Riot Glass® retrofit.

Our clients include schools, universities, office buildings, corporate c-suites, government buildings, correctional facilities, religious centers, hospitals, and luxury retail stores, to name a few.

We can adapt our retrofit solutions to fit properties of any size and will work with you and your budget to find the best solution.

The level of active shooter protection provided by Riot Glass® is priceless because of its ability to keep bullets out of your property and save lives.

Other Reasons To Choose Riot Glass®

Besides providing the best bullet-resistant door and window glazing on the market, Riot Glass® also provides 24/7 protection against other security threats.

The high impact resistance of bullet-resistant glass also makes it ideal for forced entry prevention, riot protection, and storm damage mitigation.

Whereas more traditional glass security solutions like bars, gates, board-ups, and shutters are unsightly and impractical, Riot Glass® provides round-the-clock protection without hurting the curb appeal of your property, blocking out natural light, or inhibiting your views outside.

REGULAR GLASS SAYS
“PLEASE DON’T COME IN”

Riot Glass® is heavily fortified glass that is becoming the new standard in glazing protection.

  • We had several windows broken and our store looted during a protest in downtown Los Angeles. Riot Glass provided a solution to prevent this from happening again. We still have a very open, inviting look to our store so we are happy about that.

At first, we were skeptical whether something clear would provide enough protection under the extreme conditions we experienced, but after witnessing the demonstration of the product we were convinced. Unbelievably strong!

Frequently Asked questions

What sizes are available?
Riot Glass® (RG) and ArmorPlast® (AP) are available in maximum sizes 72″ x 120″. If window openings exceed that size, we simply reconfigure the mullions using our AP Series support mullions specifically designed to accommodate our AP and RG Framing. RG Security Laminates (our exclusive line of security window film) is available in 72″ maximum widths at any length.
Will it look like my existing glass?
Riot Glass®, ArmorPlast®, and RG Security Laminates all look like regular glass. Depending on the thickness, visual acuity can be slightly affected, but overall you won’t see a distinguishable difference. Yellowing is not a concern and is covered by the warranty. For added safety, all three products allow police and patrol services to see inside your property. Privacy tints are available as an option in most Riot Glass® products.
How do I clean and care for security glass?
Traditional cleaning methods work on all types of Riot Glass® security glass and laminates. All of our security glass products have a protective outer layer to avoid scratching and marring. The process is similar to caring for a new car. You put it through all kinds of paces every day, but you do so with care and attention to detail. Treat security glass the way you would the finish on a fine automobile and you’ll enjoy years of trouble-free service. Always follow the cleaning instructions that come with your Riot Glass® purchases for optimal product longevity.
What is the warranty on the glass and framing?
Warranties vary by product and can also change depending on whether the application is commercial or residential. In some cases, our products carry a limited lifetime warranty, while others are protected for up to 15 years. Your security specialist will provide details on both warranty coverage and life expectancy for your specific product needs.
How do I know it will work?
All of our products have been thoroughly tested in highly accredited laboratory settings and, more importantly, in real-world situations. While there are no ironclad guarantees, every retail store, commercial building, school, and home needs some level of security glass protection. Security glazing products are designed to delay and deter, and in many cases are the determining factor between life and death.
What happens during a site inspection?
Our security specialists will do a complete threat assessment, discuss your goals, and provide a detailed, easy-to-read proposal. We will also measure your windows and frames, then evaluate the overall condition and retrofit adaptability to determine the best solution for your property.
Do I need to remove signage and graphics?
It depends on which product you select and where the graphics are displayed. During the site inspection, our expert security consultant will advise whether graphics must be removed and replaced or stay intact.
What is UL 752? What’s the difference between ballistic and non-ballistic ratings?
Underwriters Laboratories™ offers multiple ballistic rating levels. Designed to measure bullet resistance, ballistic ratings factor in the grain (weight), caliber, and velocity of the ammunition. Non-ballistic (containment grade) products allow bullet penetration, but won’t break down or appreciably diminish in strength. In other words, the bullets leave holes, but the panels remain intact, keeping intruders out of the building.
